BELOW GROUND SPECIFICATION

Below ground buried foul and surface water pipework

a) Cast iron pipes and fittings manufactured by Hargreaves Foundry Drainage Ltd, Water Lane, South Parade, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 9HG.

b) Foul and surface water pipework in nominal diameters 100mm to 200mm shall be installed using cast iron socketless pipes and fittings conforming to product standard BS EN 877:1999 with BSI Kitemark and BBA certificates.

c) The system shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and BS EN 12056 code of practice, BS EN 752-1 and the relevant section of Building Regulations.

Jointing Pipework

Standard Couplings – Ductile Iron

d) Couplings 100mm to 150mm diameter capable of withstanding up to 5 bar (accidental static water pressure) when suitably restrained by support brackets. Couplings 200mm diameter capable of withstanding up to 3 bar.

High Pressure Couplings

Standard Couplings – Ductile Iron

e) Stainless steel couplings capable of withstanding up to 10 bar (accidental static water pressure) with no necessity for restraining brackets.

Fixing Pipework

Standard Couplings – Ductile Iron

f) Pipework shall be installed true to line and following manufacturer’s recommended method. Where pipework is suspended (not buried), Halifax support brackets such as ductile iron series HD067 to be fixed at maximum 2m centres. Alternatives may be used as standard guidelines suggested by manufacturer.

Fittings

g) Wherever possible junctions in pipework shall be proprietary cast iron inspection chambers or 45deg branch fittings.

h) 90deg changes of direction in the pipeline should be formed with two 45deg bends.

i) Where the foul drainage connects to the vertical soil pipe, a long radius 90deg bend should be used.

Cutting

j) When cutting pipes on site, care must be taken to cut clean and square with burrs removed. It is not normally necessary to re-coat the cut ends but where there may be aggressive effluent such as strong alkaline or acid solutions passing through the system, it is recommended that a suitable touch-up paint is applied.

Coatings

k) Pipes shall be externally coated with a 2-pack epoxy paint, grey in colour with an average dry coating thickness of 170µ; internally coated with a 2-pack ochre yellow with a minimum dry coating thickness of 130µ; Fittings / Couplings shall be painted externally with a 2-pack epoxy paint, grey in colour to an average dry coating thickness of 150µ, and internally in a 2-pack epoxy paint, (grey or red in colour), to a dry coating thickness of 150µ.
